4.5.6.5 Scale of governance

Mexican fisheries have actively engaged in MSC certification. Those fisheries that have been certified or are being assessed vary in size. The Pacific Sardine Fishery is a large fishery harvested by industrial fleets. The Gulf of California Swimming Crab Fishery covers broad areas harvested by SSFs. The Baja California Red Rock Lobster Fishery is the largest lobster fishery in Mexico, but it is still small in size, covering a few neighbouring concessions. These examples confirm the general phenomenon that most MSC certified fisheries are either small or large.365 The large fishery has economy of scale and can afford the costs and expertise related to assessment. Small fisheries are easier to manage and maintain.
